KHA received a report the lodge has transformed into the "Thousand Lakes Wilderness Lodge" providing full board for fisherpeople, walkers and 4WDers in the area. Its pretty plush but it appears to have filled a need.
Bernacchi Lodge was built by the Australian Antarctic Division as a training site in the 1970s. It was found that it did not get enough snow to suit the purpose - more like Maquarie Island than Antarctica - and was handed over to the Tasmanian Government.
Between 1980 and 1999 is was used by the Army and other groups as a training and conference centre. A variety of community groups and commercial operators were interested in taking over the management of the building but nothing has eventuated.
The building was to be demolished in 2012, but earned a reprieve.
