The 2003 AGM was a seminal event in KHA history. It marked the reinvention of KHA as the cultural heritage conservation organisation it always was but never acknowledged.

Having beaten its head against the anti-huts movement for 30 years, its members frequently argued point that the huts were essential for survival in a blizzard, consistantly ignored.

Before 2004, the interpretation of the KNP 1980 Management Plan was that huts that burnt down were not to be replaced, this was in spite of the fact that huts were not even mentioned in that management plan.

Up until 2003 there was an average of one hut lost every year, totalling about 30 huts lost, many more than this were lost in the three weeks of the January 2003 fires.
